Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz Orchestra Plays The Music of Steve Williamson

Williamson-1

Saturday 23 July at 7:45pm  Purcell Room, Southbank Centre

The Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz Orchestra premiere new arrangements of the music of Steve Williamson by members of our young composers and arrangers programme: Peter Edwards, Binker Golding, James McKay and Artistic Director Gary Crosby.

After emerging to great fanfare as a member of the Jazz Warriors in the mid 1980s, tenor and soprano saxophonist Steve Williamson went on to record three superlative albums, Waltz For Grace, Rhyme Time [That Fuss Was Us] and Journey To Truth.

These recordings are important statements in jazz in the last three decades and bring together challenging compositional ideas and surging rhythms that reflect Williamson’s affinity to the American M-Base movement as well as his interest in African music and his own Jamaican heritage.

The beguiling, highly original work of Steve Williamson is borne of an enigmatic and daring personality, the nuances of which Tomorrow’s Warriors will highlight by way of adventurous charts for a large ensemble.
